The J. MONQUE’D BLUES BAND, is the oldest surviving blues band in the N.O. area and is the city’s original blues harp band(since 1959) J. has played with many famous legends of the blues over the years, including 5 years or so during the late 60′s & early 70′s with John Lee Hooker/2 short tours with Muddy Waters/late 70′s. and has been to europe 38 times. the first 3 times, as a sideman w/ MEMPHIS SLIM/CHAMPION JACK DUPREE/EDDIE BOYD. has played almost every N.O. jazzfest and will play this year on May 3rd..
a new cd is in the works now and also an upcoming acoustic cd with Italian bluesman (Paolo Venturi) just do a web search for J. MONQUE’D and you will find tons of stuff. also on you tube/Italianbluesriver.com and lots of other places. also in the band are Li’l Ray Neal(son of the late/great Raful Neal & brother of Kenny Neal). Thomas Walker(played with Li’l Red & big bad/Jumping Johnny,etc. Red Devecca(with J. on and off for over 35 years & w/Eric Lindell/Mason Ruffner/Ernie Vincent/Andy J. Forrest/Jumping Johnny,etc. Tom Worrell has been with J. for about 16 years, and is one of the area’s most well known and in demand piano men. and, Mr. Willie Cole has played with J. for almost 40 years. and played for 7 years w/Isaac Hayes and played on many sessions w/Lee Dorsey/Allen Toussaint/Irma Thomas/Benny Spellman/Ernie K – Doe,etc. and is related by blood to the late/great Lightning Hopkins, who was 1st. cousin to his mother. the J. MONQUE’D BLUES BAND is guaranteed to rock the house & will shoot you full of some of the best blues/N.O. r & b/mardi gras indian music/gospel/ and real old time rock n roll to be found.
